About TremorView

Track earthquakes live — or rewind 10 years. Drag the timeline back through a decade of USGS earthquake records on an interactive 3D globe, with plate boundaries and the volcanoes that were erupting at the time. Live mode shows quakes worldwide from the last hour to the last 30 days; scrub forward up to a year for a statistical aftershock outlook.

About the outlook

The forward view is a statistical illustration, not a forecast. Earthquake prediction is not a solved problem — nobody can say when or where a specific earthquake will happen.

It shows where aftershocks are statistically more likely using generic aftershock-decay statistics (Reasenberg & Jones 1989, Omori–Utsu), plus a simple fault-proximity score inspired by Coulomb stress transfer. For official numbers see USGS aftershock forecasts.
